LOS ANGELES, CA – The Armenian Legal Center for Justice and Human Rights (ALC), in collaboration with the Armenian Bar Association, proudly announces five critical upcoming events dedicated to addressing the urgent human rights challenges stemming from Azerbaijan’s aggression against the Armenian people. All events feature widely-acclaimed human rights attorney Siranush Sahakyan, who will present on the ongoing legal battles to free Armenian Prisoners of War (POWs), political prisoners, and hostages illegally detained by Azerbaijani authorities.

 

Siranush Sahakyan, ALC’s main partner in Armenia and advocate at international courts, has recently returned from Geneva, where she participated in a side event at the United Nations Human Rights Council focused on the dire situation of Armenian hostages.

 

Event 1: How to Litigate for Human Rights in International Courts – A Case Study from the War in Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh

Location: Loyola Law School, Los Angeles

 

This panel discussion will dive into the complexities of international human rights litigation, using the aftermath of the war in Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh as a case study. The discussion will highlight the legal strategies used to fight for justice in international courts, with a focus on human rights abuses and the plight of Armenian POWs. Siranush Sahakyan will be joined by Rajika Shah, Director of the Loyola Justice for Atrocities Clinic, in a compelling discussion on the vital role of international law in protecting vulnerable populations during conflict.

 

Event 2: Armenian POWs, Hostages & Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan

This event, hosted by the Armenian Legal Center for Justice and Human Rights in collaboration with the ARF “Aghbalian” Chapter, will feature a discussion with Siranush Sahakyan on the current status of Armenian POWs, political prisoners, and hostages. Attendees will gain insights into the ongoing legal battles and the efforts to secure their release.

 

Event 3: Reception & Briefing with Siranush Sahakyan

 

Date: October 4, 2024

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Location: Sookiasian-Amirian Residence, Glendale, CA

 

This private reception offers a unique opportunity for attendees to engage directly with Siranush Sahakyan as she provides a briefing on the current status of Armenian POWs, political prisoners, and hostages. She will share insights into the ALC’s legal initiatives, which focus on securing justice for Armenian soldiers and civilians who have been subjected to torture and illegal imprisonment by Azerbaijani forces. Attendees will learn more about the ALC’s broader agenda and the vital work being done to defend Armenian rights at the international level.

 

Event 4: Glendale City Council Meeting

This meeting will address the local government’s role in supporting the Armenian community and advocating for the rights of Armenian POWs and political prisoners. They will discuss how local policies can contribute to international advocacy efforts.

In addition to these events, Siranush Sahakyan will be interviewing with various media outlets, including Alpha News and Horizon TV.
